FedEx Announces New Delivery Robot
FedEx today announced plans to begin testing their new delivery robot called the FedEx SameDay Bot.
The SameDay Bot is designed to help make the last mile of deliveries more efficient. This robot could be used by local businesses to deliver packages to nearby homes, or a cluster of these robots could be deployed from a truck which stops in your neighbourhood.
FedEx stated the first trial of this robot would be at their headquarters in Memphis where the robot will ferry packages and mail between office buildings. If this test goes well, it could be rolled out for testing at other businesses in the city. Eventually, the hope is to have this robot delivering packages right to customers doors.
SameDay Bot itself is battery powered and can travel up to 10mph. It features a small display on the front and back to tell people nearby where it's going and what it's doing. This way people are not confused by what it's doing driving on the sidewalk beside them. It also features many sensors and LIDAR to allow the robot to travel between destinations avoiding pedestrians and other traffic autonomously.
FedEx is currently in talks with AutoZone, Lowe's, Pizza Hut, Target, Walgreens, and Walmart about using this robot to deliver their packages.
