In a surprise move from Apple, Samsung has announced Apple is rolling out the iTunes Movie and TV shows to 2018 and 2019 Samsung TVs.

Users of the new app will be able to access any previously purchased movies or tv shows along with buy and rent new content right from within the app.

This new app will be available in 100 countries around the world in the coming weeks after a firmware update to Samsung TV's/

Along with the iTunes app, Samsung TV's will be updated to support Airplay 2, allowing iOS users to stream Photos, Videos, Music and Podcasts from their mobile device or mac to the TV display.

In a statement Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services said:

“We look forward to bringing the iTunes and AirPlay 2 experience to even more customers around the world through Samsung Smart TVs, so iPhone, iPad and Mac users have yet another way to enjoy all their favorite content on the biggest screen in their home.” - Eddy Cue

My Take

Overall this appears to be an interesting strategy from Apple and would play well with the rumors of Apple launching their streaming service in the future. If they can get the iTunes App onto more devices beyond just Apple hardware, it will make it easier for users to sign up and use the new service.

I wouldn't be surprised if in the coming months we see Apple partner with other manufacturers to roll out the iTunes app to other TVs and devices. Most importantly I expect Apple to release a new app for Android just like they have for Apple Music.
